On August 12, Jeff Christian, Strata G described his work on energty efficient houses. He uses the HERS index (Home Energy Rating System) in comparing houses. A new house today has a HERS index number of about 100. New standards will make new homes have an index of about 65.
The ACH (air changes per hour) of homes is about 5 and an important thing to reduce air leakage

is to provide makeup outside air to the clothes dryer. It is important to control moisture in a house and to know where the moisture is coming from. An important new development is the heat pump that can vary it’s load.

Jeff Christian works with homeowners, municipalities, building energy technology companies and builders helping them move toward zero energy homes. Strata-G identifies, matures, and deploys technologies that reflect the company’s mission of energy efficiency and environmental stewardship. They have the equipment to make a very accurate energy audit for a house.

On August 19 Dr. Wayne Davis, UT Dean of Engineering described the Enginering college efforts to become a top 25 engineering department. Currently the graduate school is ranked number 37 and the undergraduate engineering program is ranked number 36. The number of students is increasing and the incoming students have an an verage high school gpa of 4.0 and an average ACT score of 30.5.
The Technical Society has donated $4000 this year to the Charles Ferris Technical Society scholarship fund for the UT engineering department.

On August 26 Graham Walford, UTK spoke about non destructive measurement and some of his experiences in making measurments. First the measurments must have errors and precision that are known accurately for the measurement to be useful. He used electric field disturbances to make non invasive measurements in unusual applications. Dr. Walford’s utilization of deep-based analytic skill across several programmatic problem areas includes the non-invasive qualitative real time analysis of materials during the manufacturing process. Infrared imaging and analysis, X-ray diagnostics, electric field perturbation techniques, sonic/ultrasonic, laser and other related sensing technologies have been used.

August 2013 Programs

August 5, Dr. Kelly Tiller, President & CEO, Genera Energy Inc. will speak. The title of her presentation will be “From Crops to Fuels to Markets: Growing a Commercial Biofuels Industry in Tennessee”(PDH)

Dr Keller is a graduate of the University of Tennessee with a PhD in Agricultural Economics and she is a tenured UT faculty member.

She founded Genera as a spin-out commercial business from the University of Tennessee Research Foundation. This has involved construction and RD&D operation of a $60 million cellulosic ethanol pilot plant (collaboration with DuPont) and construction and commercial operation of a $10 million Biomass Innovation Park for biomass logistics and pre-processing; production and supply-chain management .

If cellulosic ethanol can be made efficiently and it can compete with other fuels, it can remake East Tennessee. This is an opportunity to see a potential giant in it’s infancy.

August 12 Jeff Christian, Strata G. “The single biggest step toward making your house more Comfortable this Summer.”

Jeff Christian works with homeowners, municipalities, building energy technology companies and builders helping them move toward zero energy homes. He is currently working on projects around the country: South Carolina, Colorado, New England, Ohio, Knoxville and Oak Ridge. He recently developed the content for a two year Sustainability Curriculum at Cleveland State Community College with the goal of training

the students to build a zero energy house or complete a hands-on 50% extreme home makeover.

Three of the Knoxville area homes that are among the most energy efficient in the country are all on the market and will be presented. You will take a virtual tour of what is in the basement that makes these homes so incredibly comfortable, energy efficient, and surprisingly affordable. Simple lessons learned from detailed modeling and measuring the energy performance, comfort and cost will be presented. The take home messages will help you when the time comes to get started on improving your own home.

Strata-G identifies, matures, and deploys technologies that reflect the company’s mission of energy efficiency and environmental stewardship. They seek inventors and owners of intellectual property that may benefit from their high-tech service business and network to mature and market their technologies.

August 19 Dr. Wayne Davis, UT Dean of Engineering “A Transformed College of Engineering—But the Best is Yet to Come”

Dr. Wayne Davis was named Dean of the College of Engineering in March of 2009 after serving as interim dean since May, 2008. Davis received his bachelor’s degree in physics from Pfeiffer College ; a master’s in physics from Clemson University and a master’s in environmental engineering and Ph.D. in civil engineering from UT Knoxville. Davis joined the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering and became a full professor in the department in 1984. He was the university’s 2002-2003 Macebearer. Davis’ research areas are air quality management and pollution control. Dr. Davis is a Technical Society member.

August 26 Graham Walford, UTK .”Non Destructive and non-invasive measurement and analysis”.(PDH)
Non Invasive measurements and analysis may sound a dry topic but it speaks to the extension of ones senses to understand the properties and nature of the world around us. Industrial examples are shown where high speed measurement techniques are utilized (infrared, X-ray, electric field, etc.) to control materials quality and output. However, the approach is quickly advanced to the broader world of our environment, its behavior, how remote sensing can be used to assess contaminants and assess some national threats.

Dr. Walford is a Subject Matter Expert in several demanding radiation measurement fields. These include environmental, high performance counting, accident conditions and Special Nuclear Materials (SNM) in a variety of distributions. Experiences also include detection technology development and the engineering of applicable systems and components. Examples include dedicated detection assemblies, stack gas and other gas monitors, liquid and solid waste monitors, package

scanning and remote sensing. Program and program development activities have been undertaken for surveillance, area assessment and materials analysis in plume and deposited contaminants.

Dr. Walford’s utilization of deep-based analytic skill across several programmatic problem areas includes the non-invasive qualitative real time analysis of materials during the manufacturing process. Infrared imaging and analysis, X-ray diagnostics, electric field perturbation techniques, sonic/ultrasonic, laser and other related sensing technologies are combined in systems as necessary to solve specific materials assessment needs.
