December 2016 Technical Society Program

05 Dec

On December 12, 2016 Walter Wunderlich will be the Technical Society of Knoxville speaker. He has prepared a slide show with the theme “The national park system centennial 100-mile hiking challenge”. Walter will present his impressions during 15 hikes totaling about 150 miles, between January 1 and December 1, 2016, all in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park- and unfortunately not all good. (Surrounded by bears at midnight with no flashlight Walter?)

This year the National Park Service was celebrating its’ Centennial to honor the first 100 years of the National Park Service and launch into the next century. They encouraged hikers to set a goal of reaching 100 miles during this special year of celebration, between January 1-December 6, 2016. All those that completed their 100 miles by December 6th will receive a commemorative “Smokies Centennial Challenge – Hike 100” pin.

Walter Wunderlich is an 84 year old engineer, a water expert, originally from Germany, who retired from TVA and who hikes regularly in spite of recent serious illness. He is an inspiration to us all. Walter has served as a Technical Society of Knoxville officer for many years and he is always a source of wisdom- especially on the conversion to the metric system.
